E Locus - Extension

Determines the production or non-production of eumelanin (black, brown pigment)

Symptoms
Wild allele E triggers the production of eumelanin.

Gene involved
MC1R

Mutation tested
c.250G>A (e)

Transmission mode : Autosomal recessive
Age of onset : The final coat colour stabilises between 2 and 5 years old
Specificity : Amber coat colour
Remarcks : A cat born with an orange colour coat will not be affected by the mutation but may transmit it.

Publication : Peterschmitt et al. (2009). Mutation in the melanocortin 1 receptor is associated with amber colour in the Norwegian Forest Cat.

Gene involved
MC1R

Mutation tested
